Here are 50 dohas (couplets) by Kabir, a 15th-century Indian mystic poet and saint, whose writings influenced the Bhakti movement. These dohas are rich in spiritual and philosophical wisdom.
1. साईं इतना दीजिए, जा में कुटुम समाय।
मैं भी भूखा न रहूँ, साधु न भूखा जाय॥
(Give me enough, O Lord, to take care of my family. May I not go hungry, nor may any guest leave my home unfed.)
2. बड़ा हुआ तो क्या हुआ, जैसे पेड़ खजूर।
पंथी को छाया नहीं, फल लागे अति दूर॥
(What is the use of being big like a date tree, which neither offers shade to travelers nor bears fruit within reach?)
3. कबीरा खड़ा बाजार में, सबकी मांगे खैर।
ना काहू से दोस्ती, ना काहू से बैर॥
(Kabir stands in the marketplace, wishing well for all. He is neither friends with anyone nor enemies with anyone.)
4. चलती चक्की देख कर, दिया कबीरा रोये।
दो पाटन के बीच में, साबुत बचा न कोये॥
(Seeing the grinding stones, Kabir weeps. Between the two stones, no grain is left whole.)
5. साधु ऐसा चाहिए, जैसा सूप सुभाय।
सार-सार को गहि रहे, थोथा देई उड़ाय॥
(A true saint is like a winnowing basket. It retains the essence and discards the useless.)
6. माटी कहे कुम्हार से, तू क्या रोंदे मोहे।
एक दिन ऐसा आयेगा, मैं रोंदूंगी तोहे॥
(The clay says to the potter, why do you knead me? A day will come when I will knead you.)
7. पोथी पढ़ि पढ़ि जग मुआ, पंडित भया न कोय।
ढाई आखर प्रेम का, पढ़े सो पंडित होय॥
(The world dies reading scriptures, but no one becomes wise. One who understands the essence of love alone is wise.)
8. हरि सेती हरि की बही, हरि का लीन्हा नाम।
दुरमति हर की दूरि कर, हरि भजे हरि काम॥
(The ledger of the Lord holds the name of the Lord. One who prays to the Lord drives away evil thoughts.)
9. कबीरा सोई पीर है, जो जाने पर पीर।
जो पर पीर न जानई, सो काफिर बेपीर॥
(Kabir is the true saint who feels the pain of others. One who does not feel the pain of others is a non-believer and without faith.)
10. सुखिया सब संसार है, खाये और सोये।
दुखिया दास कबीर है, जागे और रोये॥
(The world is happy, eating and sleeping. The servant Kabir is sorrowful, staying awake and weeping.)
11. माला फेरत जुग भया, गया न मन का फेर।
कर का मनका डार दे, मन का मनका फेर॥
(Rotating the rosary for ages did not bring a change in the mind. Discard the beads of the hand, and rotate the beads of the mind.)
12. प्रेम न बाड़ी उपजै, प्रेम न हाट बिकाय।
राजा प्रजा जेहि रुचि करै, सिर दे सो ले जाय॥
(Love does not grow in fields, nor is it sold in the market. King or commoner, whoever desires it must sacrifice their head.)
13. जिन खोजा तिन पाइयां, गहरे पानी पैठ।
मैं बपुरा बूड़न डरा, रहा किनारे बैठ॥
(Those who searched, found it by diving deep into the water. I, a coward, feared drowning, and stayed at the shore.)
14. जो उग्या सो अन्तबै, फूल्या सो कुमलाहीं।
जो चिनिया सो ढहि पड़ा, जो आया सो जाहीं॥
(What rises, sets; what blooms, withers. What is built, collapses; whoever comes, goes.)
15. रहना नहीं देस बिराना है।
यह संसार कागद की पुड़िया, बूँद पड़े घुल जाना है॥
(This world is not a permanent abode; it is like a paper packet that dissolves with a drop of water.)
16. बुरा जो देखन मैं चला, बुरा न मिलिया कोय।
जो दिल खोजा आपना, मुझसे बुरा न कोय॥
(I set out to find evil, but found none. When I searched my own heart, I found no one worse than me.)
17. हमन है इश्क मस्ताना, हमन को होशियारी क्या।
रहें आजाद या जग से, हमन को दुनिया से यारी क्या॥
(We are intoxicated with love, what need do we have for prudence? Whether we remain free or bound, what relationship do we have with the world?)
18. कबीरा गरब न कीजिए, कबहुँ न हंसिए कोय।
जो तिरस्कारे राह में, काबा काशी सोय॥
(Kabir, do not be proud, never laugh at anyone. Who knows who will be our savior on the path of life?)
19. जाति न पूछो साधु की, पूछ लीजिये ज्ञान।
मोल करो तरवार का, पड़ा रहन दो म्यान॥
(Do not ask the caste of a saint, ask about his wisdom. Value the sword, not the scabbard.)
20. माया मरी न मन मरा, मर-मर गया शरीर।
आशा त्रिसना न मरी, कह गए दास कबीर॥
(Neither illusion nor mind died, only the body perished. Desires and greed did not die, says Kabir.)
21. दोस पराए देखि करि, चला हसन्त हसन्त।
अपने याद न आवई, जिनका आदि न अंत॥
(Seeing the faults of others, you laugh loudly. You do not remember your own faults, which have no beginning or end.)
22. अमर जोहारी खोजिया, रतन दीना सब हाथ।
सांच बराबर तप नहीं, झूठ बराबर पाप॥
(The true jeweler searches, and finds all precious gems. There is no penance like truth, no sin like falsehood.)
23. हिन्दू कहूं तो हूँ नहीं, मुसलमान भी नाहिं।
पंछी ऐसा प्रेमा का, घर पायो नहीं जात॥
(I am neither a Hindu nor a Muslim. I am a bird of eternal love, which cannot be confined to any home.)
24. मन लागो मेरो यार फकीरी में।
ऐसा सुख पाया, संतोष नहीं धरी॥
(My mind is inclined towards a life of simplicity. Such happiness I have found, beyond all satisfaction.)
25. साधु सँगति किजिये, तजि मति कुसंग।
भस्मा बकरी खायेगी, तस्मा सींग न तंग॥
(Keep the company of saints, and avoid bad company. A goat eats thorns, but its horns are not harmed.)
26. अकथ कहानी प्रेम की, कछु कही न जाय।
गूँगे केरी सर्करा, बैठि-बैठि मुसकाय॥
(The indescribable story of love cannot be told. It is like sugar for the dumb, who can only sit and smile.)

29. जहाँ प्रेम तहँ राम है, जहाँ राम तहँ नहीं काम।
जहाँ काम तहँ नहीं राम, जहाँ राम तहँ सब सोयाम॥
(Where there is love, there is God; where there is God, there is no desire. Where there is desire, there is no God; where there is God, there is everything.)
30. गुरु गोविन्द दोऊ खड़े, काके लागूं पाय।
बलिहारी गुरु आपने, गोविन्द दियो बताय॥
(When both Guru and God stand before me, whose feet should I touch first? I am devoted to my Guru, who showed me the way to God.)
31. कबीरा मन निर्मल भया, जैसे गंगा नीर।
पाछे लागे हरि फिरें, कहत कबीर कबीर॥
(Kabir’s mind has become pure, like the water of the Ganges. The Lord follows him, chanting ‘Kabir, Kabir.’)
32. निंदक नियरे राखिये, आँगन कुटी छवाय।
बिन पानी बिन साबुना, निर्मल करे सुभाय॥
(Keep your critic close, build a hut in your courtyard. Without water and soap, he cleanses your nature.)
33. पानी केरा बुदबुदा, अस मानस की जात।
देखत ही छुप जाएगा, ज्यों तारा परभात॥
(The human race is like a bubble of water. It will disappear as soon as it is seen, like stars at dawn.)
34. जैसा भोजन खाइये, तैसा ही मन होय।
जैसा पानी पीजिये, तैसी वाणी होय॥
(As is the food you eat, so is your mind. As is the water you drink, so is your speech.)
35. झीनी झीनी बीनी चदरिया।
काहे कै ताना काहे कै भरनी, कौन तार से बीनी चदरिया॥
(The cloth is woven finely. What is the warp and what is the weft, with what thread is it woven?)
36. साधु ऐसा चाहिए, जैसा सूप सुभाय।
